Book Review of Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

“When you are reading a book, and you know that it is going to be a tragedy; you can feel the cold and darkness coming, see the net drawing tight around the characters who live and breathe on the pages. But you are tied to the story as if being dragged behind a carriage and you cannot let go or turn the course aside.”Tessa Gray (Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare)

Clockwork Princess is a historical young adult fantasy, it is the third and last book of The Infernal Devices Trilogy, which is a prequel to The Mortal Instruments Series.

PLOT:

THE INFERNAL DEVICES WILL NEVER STOP COMING

A net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute. Mortmain plans to use his Infernal Devices, an army of pitiless automatons, to destroy the Shadowhunters. He needs only one last item to complete his plan: he needs Tessa Gray.

Charlotte Branwell, head of the London Institute, is desperate to find Mortmain before he strikes. But when Mortmain abducts Tessa, the boys who lay equal claim to her heart, Jem and Will, will do anything to save her. For though Tessa and Jem are now engaged, Will is as much in love with her as ever.

As those who love Tessa rally to rescue her from Mortmain’s clutches, Tessa realizes that the only person who can save her is herself. But can a single girl, even one who can command the power of angels, face down an entire army?

Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment, and the tangled threads of love and loss intertwine as the Shadowhunters are pushed to the very brink of destruction in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.

Oh my god, this was so good, on finishing the book and closing my laptop, I was just staring off into space, like everything was just beautifully showcased, and no loose ends, and I am going to say it, and I know for a fact that this is one of the rare times I will be saying it, I loved the love triangle, It added so much value to the book for me, it was wonderful. The book wasn’t light in any shape or form, there were themes of love, sacrifice, friendship, and the cycle of life,. The pacing again, like in the first book in the trilogy was moderate. This was a fitting end to the infernal devices. The question, what exactly Tessa is? is answered.

CHARACTERS:

Tessa, I’ve already said this and will say it again she is so strong and brave, and the epilogue, gosh. There is a Harry Potter quote I really like.
“Don’t pity the dead Harry, pity the living and most of all those who live without love” – JK Rowling

This is so very true, I recently lost a loved one, it is indeed the living who suffer. Honestly, the book sort of put it into perspective, being immortal isn’t the boon it is made to be.

Tessa deserves all the good things in the world, and her love for books stays the same, I am so glad to have met her (In a way).

Will, Will, Will, he is amazing his emotions were so raw in this book, and he is a really memorable character. Snarky, Arrogant, Funny, Closed off, has a heart of gold, and is catastrophically handsome, now what more can a girl ask for, total Book Boyfriend material but seriously my heart broke for him a couple of times, the above quote works for him too, his love for Tessa is so deep and beautiful.

James Carstairs, I don’t know what to say, his storyline really played with my emotions, and I do not get emotional by books, the last time it happened, was with Perks of Being a Wallflower. There isn’t much to say, not without a lot of spoilers anyway, but he’s wonderful and amazing 💓.

Jem and Will, have such a pure relationship, their love for each other, is something else truly. (Spoiler: it is painful and bittersweet too).

The love triangle, it was so beautifully done, I mean wow, here it wasn’t just 2 people in love with the same person, they all loved each other, and everyone knew about everyone’s love and understood & accepted it.

The epilogue really got to me, the end was so bittersweet but hopeful, and all the themes are shown beautifully, and the plot is very unpredictable.

I would give it a 14+ age rating and 5 stars. There is violence and intimate scenes, but not adult ones, things happen in a ‘closed-door’ way.

So this brings us to the end of The Infernal Devices Trilogy, I am going to go back to Melanie Cellier’s Four Kingdoms universe and start the next connected series Beyond The Four Kingdoms.

Buh-bye,

Yours,

A Fellow Bookworm
